Valentines for Home Health and Hospice Patients

Have a friend of loved one in home health or hospice care? We have some great ideas for Valentine’s-inspired ways to make them feel loved.

Love-ly Decor

Many home health and hospice patients are bed- or house-bound. Decorating their bedroom or living room is a great way to help them feel surrounded by love. Try making a garland of photographs cut into heart shapes, adding a few heart-patterned pillows, or gifting them a cute stuffed animal.

Flowers

Who doesn’t love receiving flowers? Consider giving a live plant rather than cut flowers so that you can brighten their room for months to come.

A Handwritten Note

Taking the time to write a heartfelt letter or list can make the receiver feel very loved. On difficult days, they will have something beautiful to re-read and be cheered up by. A few Valentine’s-themed ideas:

  • “Memories I Love To Think About” - Fold a few pieces of paper in half, and create a little booklet. On each page of the booklet, write about one of your favorite memories with the person. This is a great art project for children (and creative adults!) as well, who can illustrate and color the pages.

  • 50 Things I Admire About You - Most of the time, we take people’s best qualities for granted. Spend a few moments listing your favorite character traits or accomplishments of the person you love.

  • “Ways You Made Me Feel Loved” - Acknowledging all the little things that someone has done for you over the years is an amazing way to tell them that you love them. From the little notes they tucked into your lunch box as a child, to the way they would always keep your favorite drink in the refrigerator, to the way they always remembered to mail you a card on your birthday- all the little gestures meant so much over the years.

Love from Nature

We live in such a beautiful part of the world- why not take advantage of it when you are trying to express your love for someone? Many times you can find heart-shaped rocks on the beach, or find heart-shaped leaves in the forest. And if you can’t find something in the right shape, make it! Whittle a heart into a stick, paint a loving design on a rock, or glue some driftwood in the shape of a heart onto a board.

Quality Time

Even if you can’t buy or make someone a gift for Valentine’s Day, a simple phone call, letter, text, or email is enough to make someone feel cherished.
