5 Questions To Ask A Hospice Provider

Choosing a hospice provider for yourself or a loved one can be difficult, scary, and perhaps even feel a bit overwhelming. How do you know that you are making the right decision? How do you know that you will receive the level of care you desire and expect?

It is important to ask the right questions so that you get all the information you need to make a decision that you feel good about. Here are 5 questions to get you started off in the right direction:

1) What care services will I be receiving from the hospice, and what services will I need to arrange for myself?

Hospice care is focused on the healthcare needs of the patient. Many hospices, Coastal Home Health & Hospice included, also offer additional services from physical therapists, speech therapists, occupational therapy, medical social workers, spiritual care, death doulas, and grief support groups, but most hospices do not provide cooking, cleaning, or other similar services. This means that you may need to arrange for these services at the same time that you are arranging for hospice care. Coastal can provide you with a list of area service providers if you need it.

2) How much will it cost?

While the majority of insurance plans have some sort of hospice benefit, the coverage of each insurance plan will vary. Coastal is happy to give you an estimated cost breakdown based on your individual insurance benefits so you have all the information you need upfront.

3) How fast do hospice providers respond in the case of an emergency?

Obviously, if you or your loved one is experiencing an emergency, call 911. What most people mean by this question, however, is something more along the lines of “How fast will my nurse respond if I feel like I need them?” Coastal has nurses available on-call 24/7. You will always be able to speak with someone here when you need help.

4) What are other people saying about this hospice?

Can the hospice provide you with references? Are there reviews online? Has your medical provider heard anything- good or bad- about the hospice(s) you are considering? Choosing a hospice with a strong reputation in the community can give you some reassurance that you or your loved one will receive quality care.

5) What if I need special equipment, like a special bed, wheelchair, shower chair, or similar?

Does your hospice provide or rent this equipment to you? Do they deliver? What will your insurance cover and what is considered an out-of-pocket expense? What happens to the equipment when you no longer need it?

Obviously, these are just a few of the many questions you will have on your hospice journey. We are always happy to answer any questions you have. Call our office at 541-469-0405 any time.
